Supporting Kids Through Big Emotions

Every child experiences big feelings—whether it’s anger over a conflict with a sibling, sadness after a tough day at school, or excitement that feels almost overwhelming. These emotions are a normal part of development, but for kids, learning how to manage them can be a challenge. As parents, caregivers, or educators, you play a key role in helping children not only express their feelings but also build the skills to regulate them in healthy ways.

One of the most powerful things you can do is validate your child’s emotions. Instead of dismissing their reaction with “You’re fine” or “It’s not a big deal,” try acknowledging it: “I can see you’re feeling really frustrated right now.” This small shift helps children feel understood and teaches them that their emotions are real and acceptable. It also opens the door for meaningful conversations about what they’re experiencing.

Another effective strategy is to teach coping tools early on. For younger children, this might look like taking three slow breaths, squeezing a stress ball, or drawing how they feel. Older kids and teens might benefit from journaling, going for a walk, or using positive self-talk. The more tools they practice when they’re calm, the more likely they’ll be able to use them when big emotions arise.

Finally, model emotional regulation yourself. Children learn by watching the adults around them. If they see you taking a pause to calm down, or hear you say, “I’m feeling stressed, so I’m going to take a quick break,” they learn that emotions are manageable—not something to fear or avoid. By combining validation, teaching coping strategies, and modeling healthy behavior, you equip your child with the skills to navigate life’s ups and downs with resilience.
