Proving Perinatal Counselling to Pregnant and Postpartum Moms

Perinatal Mental Health

The transition to parenthood can be both beautiful and challenging. Pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period bring profound physical, emotional, and psychological changes. While this time is often portrayed as joyful, it can also be overwhelming. Many parents experience mood changes, anxiety, or depression that go beyond the typical “baby blues.” Perinatal mental health counselling provides understanding, support, and strategies to help parents navigate this important stage with compassion and care.

At Southside PsychologySamantha O’Brien offers specialized counselling in perinatal mental health, supporting parents through the emotional ups and downs that can accompany pregnancy and the postpartum period. Samantha creates a safe, non-judgmental space where individuals can share their experiences openly, process complex emotions, and build confidence in their role as parents.

Perinatal mental health includes both the prenatal period (during pregnancy) and the postpartum period (after birth). During these times, hormonal shifts, sleep deprivation, life adjustments, and the emotional demands of caregiving can significantly affect well-being. Through her compassionate approach, Samantha helps parents identify and manage these changes early, which reduces the risk of prolonged distress and fostering healthier emotional adjustment.

Common concerns addressed in perinatal counselling include postpartum depression, anxiety, panic attacks, intrusive thoughts, birth trauma, relationship stress, and identity changes. For many, the transition to parenthood may also bring feelings of isolation, guilt, or loss of confidence. Samantha’s supportive guidance allows parents to explore these experiences safely, learn coping strategies, and reconnect with their sense of self.

Perinatal counselling is not only for mothers. Partners and fathers can also experience emotional challenges as they adjust to new roles and responsibilities. Samantha provides inclusive support for all parents, helping couples communicate more effectively, share responsibilities, and maintain emotional connection during this major life transition.

Her sessions draw from evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mindfulness-Based strategies, customized to meet each individual’s needs. Samantha focuses on helping parents regulate emotions, challenge negative thought patterns, and align their actions with what matters most to them.

Early support can make a meaningful difference, not only for parents but for their children as well. By addressing mental health and emotional needs early on, Samantha helps families build strong foundations for attachment, resilience, and connection.
